10 Tips for a Happier Life: How to Reduce Stress and Increase Joy

Many of us can feel like something is missing from our state of emotional well-being. Even when actively pursuing happiness we often get distracted by the demands of a busy life, which can lead us away from identifying and prioritizing activities that genuinely bring us joy and fulfillment. Sometimes we need to take a step back and look at the big picture, take a breath, slow things down a bit to better handle certain situations and be present in these busy moments.

And of course, everyone knows by incorporating healthy habits like a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and regular exercise can significantly boost happiness levels. But it’s easier said than done.

Here are some tips to increase joy and reduce stress:

  • Practice Gratitude: Consciously reflecting on things you are grateful for can significantly boost happiness and reduce stress. Even just stepping outside and letting the sun hit your face for a few minutes can be gratifying, that first bite of a chocolate chip cookie or hearing that your child loves you are all gratifying moments that we sometimes don’t take notice of.
  • Exercise Regularly: Exercise releases endorphins, which naturally elevate mood and combats stress. I have a really hard time motivating myself to exercise, I try to just take a short walk in my neighborhood in the mornings while my son rides his bike around.
  • Sleep hygiene: Getting enough quality sleep is essential for overall well-being and can improve your ability to manage stress. Most adults need between 7 and 8 hours of sleep every night. It’s a crucial part of life that affects your physical, mental and emotional well-being.
  • Mindfulness practices: Meditation and deep breathing techniques can help you stay present and reduce anxiety. Find a quiet place to sit and close your eyes (even if you have to hide in the bathroom), go outside with your bare feet and sit under a tree for 10 minutes or so, soak in the earth’s healing energy and release your stress to the universe.
  • Healthy eating: A balanced diet provides your body with the nutrients it needs to function optimally and manage stress. I know it’s easier to grab an go but prep a salad with your favorite fixings the day before, grill some marinaded chicken and leave it in the fridge to eat for a few days, grab an apple instead of junk food.
  • Social connection: Spending time with supportive friends and family can combat feelings of loneliness and boost happiness. Make lunch plans with a close friend, sit with your child and ask them about their dreams.
  • Acts of kindness:  Helping others can improve your own mood and sense of purpose.  Bring up your neighbors garbage bins after they’ve been emptied, give someone a compliment, give someone you love a big hug.
  • Goal setting: Setting realistic and achievable goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivation. Join a pilates class ( low impact exercise), starting reading a book on a topic you are interested in learning about, be more present in the moments that matter (no rushing).
  • Self-care: Make time for activities you enjoy, whether it’s reading, listening to music, or spending time in nature. And make sure to celebrate the small achievements.

True happiness isn’t solely dependent on external achievements, but rather arises from a holistic approach that includes positive thinking, nurturing meaningful relationships, prioritizing physical and mental well-being, personal growth, stress management, and finding purpose in daily activities; essentially, happiness is about appreciating the little things, being grateful, and engaging in activities that genuinely bring you joy, regardless of what those activities might be.

Happiness involves finding purpose and meaning in what you do, cherishing meaningful relationships, and feeling resilient in the face of challenges. It’s about appreciating the small pleasures in life, being grateful for what you have. And everyone is different. Some people may enjoy quiet meditation and yoga while others enjoy working out to heavy metal music. Whatever feels good to you is what you should do more of.
